HOW ON EARTH was he supposed to concentrate on his first training session with Shaylah when his thoughts kept returning to the hike with Skylar the day before? It had been the sexiest experience of his life. He was glad he’d decided to take her there. The hidden waterfall had been his special place he’d go to whenever he’d needed to clear his head or just get away to be alone.

Now it was their special place.

As Dex walked toward A Helpful Paw, he felt like skipping. When was the last time he’d felt so completely happy? So sexually satisfied, but also so incredibly in love that he was practically floating. He never wanted to come down from this high. He had to figure out a way to hold on to her.

Entering the building he looked around. As before, dogs and trainers worked together in separate pens. Some played games, while others worked. Dogs barked and commands were issued, balls and toys flew through the air. Dex’s heart raced. It was a little intimidating. Could he really do this?

He stood there awkwardly, scanning the room and then waved at Kendal as she approached.

“Hey Dex, ready for your first training session?” At her warm smile, he felt some of the uneasiness subside. They’d worked with hundreds of people. They knew how to make the best human/canine connections. He just needed to put his trust in Kendal and her team.

He cleared his throat. “Absolutely,” he said, hoping he sounded confident. “This is just a little nerve-racking.”

“Totally understandable, but you’ll relax in no time, I promise,” she said. “Let me introduce you to Shaylah’s trainer, Lee. He’s going to be working with you both here at the facility and then he will work with you at your own home when we move to the next level.”

The next level, when they started training outside the facility. When they brought her to places Dex often went and taught her the appropriate behavior in everyday situations like movie theatres, restaurants, businesses. When she was introduced to Dex’s family and friends and the people Shaylah would need to bond with other than Dex.

His palms sweat. This was a big commitment.

One step at a time.

Kendal led the way to the pen where Shaylah and Lee waited.

“You must be Dex,” Lee said, extending a hand in welcome. He was a tall, thin man about Dex’s age wearing a T-shirt with the facility’s logo.

Next to him, Shaylah—fifteen pounds, golden fur, wearing her therapy dog vest—sat patiently, but her tail wagged in excitement.

“Great to meet you,” Dex said shaking Lee’s hand. Then he bent to pet Shaylah. “Hey, girl.”

The dog looked at Lee and Lee nodded his approval before she approached Dex and licked his hand. Dex pet the soft fur and the pup danced happily, enjoying the attention.

“Ready to get started?” Lee asked Dex.

Dex stood and nodded and his training officially began. They started by playing with Shaylah’s toys—a game of fetch, then a tug-of-war with her chew toy. Dex laughed at her determination and strength.
